The TCA certifications are intended for those professionals who have a foundational education or clinical practice and have then completed the requirements for specializing in sexology. TCA has been certifying and re-certifying qualified applicants since 2012.

TCA - Therapist Certification Association

The Therapist Certification Association (TCA) certifies professionals in the field of Clinical Sexology who have attained the education and expertise to assess and treat sexual dysfunctions and disorders. An association of professionals in the field of Clinical Sexology. The Board is comprised of doctoral-level therapists and educators with significant experience and credentials in Clinical Sexology and are able to effectively evaluate applicants’ attainment of requirements for certification that are on a par with standards in the field. Successful applicants will be certified as either Sex Therapists, Clinical Sexologists, or Sexology Educators, depending on their area of practice.

Clinical Sexology is a broad field that encompasses many aspects of human sexual behavior and the issues that interfere with optimal sexual functioning. Certification is based on the following:

1. Completion of the educational requirements from a TCA Board-approved provider, including coverage of topics standard to the field, as evidenced by textbooks and various training programs; Click here for a description of the requirements.

2. Case consultation hours with certified sexologists who meet the approval by the TCA Board. The consultants (also referred to as “supervisors” although they do not provide the direct supervision as defined and required for licensure, nor are they responsible for the clinician applicant’s work with clients) will have evaluated the applicant’s ability to work with complex cases.

3. A written exam completed independently by the applicant confirms their knowledge of basic sexology principles and practices.

The TCA certifications are intended for those professionals who have a foundational education or clinical practice and have then completed the requirements for specializing in sexology. These professionals include the following: Psychotherapists, including Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Clinical Social Workers; psychologists; medical professionals; healthcare professionals; educators; and life coaches.
