I believe in providing a safe and non-judgmental environment for counseling my clients. Without the feeling of safety and not being judged it is difficult if not impossible to build the necessary trust and rapport to make therapy effective. It also important for me to have a client that has a readiness for positive changes in his/her/their life.
I have experience in helping clients with suicidal idealization and self-harm, sexual orientation and gender identity, personal and professional relationship challenges, emotional regulation, stress, anxiety, and depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues. I believe in a collaborative, customized and multidimensional approach to therapy with each client.
I have earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Community Development majoring in Psychology from Central Michigan University (CMU) and a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Michigan School of Professional Psychology (MISPP). I was a leader for the Psychology Connection at the CMU Global Campuses focusing on building a better understanding around transgender issues and education in the Psychology classes. I am certified in Case Management from Wayne County Community College. I am currently a doctoral student at International Institute of Clinical Sexology in Miami, Shores, Florida working towards my PhD with a specialization in the care for transgender individuals.
Recent work and volunteer experience include the Macomb County Crisis Center and working with the Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb County area LGBT community focusing on transgender issues. My previous work experiences along with providing psychotherapy has provided me an appreciation and greater understanding of human behavior. I have provided clinical training on treating transgender clients to my colleagues at the private practice I worked at and at other local mental health agencies to educate clinicians in becoming more multi-culturally competent with transgender individuals. I have sponsored Trans Talks events which entails a transgender guest speaker sharing their personal story at various community colleges and universities in Southeast Michigan.
I have served on the planning committees for Motor City Pride Detroit, World AIDS Day Detroit, and the One Campaign. Member of the American Psychological Association's divisions 1, 30, 32, 44 & 51 and a member of the Michigan Psychological Association. Additionally, proud member of the World Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and facilitator for a Stand with Trans transgender youth support group in Wyandotte, Michigan and Royal Oak, Michigan. I remain passionate in my continued work as a psychotherapist and advocate for the transgender community.
